Baltic Sea on the brink

Panel discussion at 11 a.m. on the connection between intensive livestock farming and eutrophication of the Baltic Sea

Panel discussion at 11 a.m. on the connection between intensive livestock farming and eutrophication of the Baltic Sea with Dr. Susanna Knotz, graduate biologist; Wolf Wichmann, underwater photographer, Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland and Inka Schube, curator of the "Pig Consciousness" exhibition

The Baltic Sea, with its narrow connections to the North Sea, is considered by marine biologists to be a "trapped sea" with very little water exchange. Enormous quantities of liquid manure waste from factory farming flow into it. These substances promote the growth of algae, which greatly reduce the oxygen concentration in the water and can therefore lead to fish deaths. They also produce toxins that can make people ill if they eat fish or mussels - and can even lead to fatal poisoning.
