Kunstkaten Ahrenshoop

The Ahrenshoop Kunstkaten is an exhibition and events house managed by the Ahrenshoop tourist office and is one of the oldest galleries in Northern Germany. Throughout the year, visitors enjoy the changing exhibitions about the artists’ colony of Ahrenshoop, the subsequent generations of artists, all the way to the art of the present day.

In 1909, the showroom was opened, designed in the local style by the painters Paul Müller-Kaempff (1861– 1941) and Theobald Schorn (1866–1913). It is one of the oldest galleries in northern Germany. The art cottage or “Kunstkaten” was, however, only able to serve as a meeting place for artists and those interested in art until 1918, and then again from 1946. It has been owned by the municipality since 1993, and is currently operated by the tourist office.
Nature, landscape, sea,  people reflected in art – that is the general theme of the exhibitions. Works from the more than 125-year history of the painters’ colony attract as much interest as contemporary pieces. The rooms are also used year-round for concerts, lectures and other events. In the finest tradition, the showroom contributes significantly to the cultural life of Ahrenshoop.
